As an aid to our U. S. customers wishing to travel to Cuba, here are some excerpts from the Cuba Handbook authored by Christopher P. Baker. These items indicate the United States position with regard to American citizens traveling to Cuba, including some of the travel options available to you.

"Contrary to popular belief, US law does not prohibit US citizens from visiting Cuba. However, tourism is effectively banned by the Trading With the Enemy Act, which prohibits US citizens from spending money there.

"The Cubans have no restrictions on US tourists. On the contrary; they welcome US visitors with open arms. The Cubans are savvy—they won't stamp your passport. As many as 60,000 US citizens visited Cuba in 1995; only about 20% did so legally, while the rest slipped in through third countries.

"The regulations change frequently. For the latest provisions, [make sure to] contact the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), US Department of the Treasury, Washington, D.C. 20200, tel. (202) 622-2520. Request the Cuban Assets Control Regulations."


Habana Vieja (Old Havana)

Old Havana is a wonderful area within the current city, which--like Cuba itself--is interesting simply because it remains much as it was years ago. It's a rare chance to see a location that isn't being made up to look like a little America, but something which remains a truly different country and culture.

Take a walk in the small streets, enjoy the people and the music you'll hear from everywhere. Have a drink in the small cafes or lunch in one of the restaurants; enjoy the book market and all the breathtaking architecture of the surrounding buildings.

Also, when you go to the bars, try the famouse drink of Cuba, the Mojito!

If you like Jazz music, then La Zorra y el Cuervo is the place to go! The latin-inspired live jazz is incredible, and it is often said to be enjoyed even by those who normally don't like jazz. This is a place of true atmosphere as well--a small smoky basement place on La Rampa.

But if you arrive late, you could have trouble getting a seat, and find yourself sitting behind one of the columns in the room, which can quickly become a nuisance.

Cabaret is hugely popular in Havana. Every provincial town has its own version, some tackier than others, but the basic formula is the same: a compere, a romantic tenor, a soprano, possibly a comedian and above all, the dancers!

In Havana, cabarets are mostly staged at the hotels. The Nacional has a good one, as does the Havana Cafe on Paseo next to the hotel Melia Cohiba. But the most famous one, and one of the oldest, is the Tropicana.

Opening in 1931, it called itself "Paradise under the Stars" and to this day it will refund your money if the show is rained off. The mood is set by a drive past fountains and statues of scantily clad ladies before reaching the main seating area of tables around the semi-circular stage.

According to your taste, you will find the show either unbelievably offensive or a deliciously innocent romp. The costumes alone are an art form. Tropicana is the original spangle-fest, shimmy-fest, and flesh-fest.
