Biergartens (`beer gardens'), Bierkellers (`beer cellars') and Gaststätte (`restaurants') are probably the most typical of German restaurants, and you'll find them spilling over the streets of Munich. The Germans are fond of their beer and drink it along with traditional sausages, pork knuckles, roast chicken and the ever-present sauerkraut and potatoes.

Most beer halls or beer gardens, which are generally very pleasant places, usually serve some sort of food, and often even have complete meals on their menus. Traditional German restaurants, known as Gaststätte, are very popular all across Munich, and are often good places to get a taste of German cuisine beyond sauerkraut and lager. Probably the most famous of all is the renowned Hofbräuhaus, well visited by locals as well as tourists

In addition, the city has a large number of eateries which serve international cuisine-- mostly European, especially French, Balkan and Italian; but also Turkish, Oriental and fast food.

For the die-hard nightclub fans, the entire Schwabing and Haidhausen areas are hard to beat when it comes to liveliness. The bars throb with the sound of pulsating music, and people dance until the very break of dawn.
