ROME LANDMARKS AND HISTORIC SITES

The serene Piazza Navona was originally laid out as an athletic stadium in 90 AD. Today you can savor the play of light on terra-cotta and ocher stucco buildings, listen to the cascading water in its imposing fountains and admire the baroque church dedicated to Saint Agnes. You can't miss the sculptor Bernini's Fountain of the Moor and Fountain of the Four Rivers, its colossal figures representing four great rivers and their continents. A third fountain is a 19th-century rendering of Neptune.

The Pantheon is a short stroll south. It's a huge round temple dedicated to the gods, built in the 2nd century AD and considered the best-preserved Roman monument in existence. The Pantheon's dome--a spectacular feat of Roman engineering--was the inspiration for Michelangelo's dome on St. Peter's.

At Trevi Fountain, a few blocks north and west of the Pantheon, the mighty god Neptune rides his winged chariot through gushing waters from the ancient Acqua Vergine aqueduct. Throngs of tourists gather to admire this site, which is illuminated for night viewing as well. Often considered one of the most romantic sections of the Eternal City.

Fellini's La Dolce Vita highlighted a lifestyle in which entertainment meant savoring the city's sidewalk cafes and nightclubs--and we think this still holds true today.

Named after Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, this is an old standby. Once a favorite with the Romans of La Dolce Vita, this club is now experiencing a revival--it's beloved by locals. We think this is probably one of those places that's here to stay. There's a lively piano bar, disco dancing and even a restaurant. On Friday and Saturday nights there's a live band.
