In 1962 the World's Fair was held in Seattle, and the city proudly proclaimed the expo the 'Century 21 Exposition'. It did well, bringing in over 9 million visitors from around the world for a glimpse of Tomorrow, via the gleaming city of Seattle.

What remains of those futuristic groupings of exhibition halls, arenas and public spaces has been incorporated into today's Seattle Center. The grounds are home to dance, theater, opera, museums and the Key Arena.

Also: Rising above Seattle Center is Queen Anne--a neighborhood of majestic red-brick houses and apartment buildings, beautiful lawns manicured to perfection and wondrous views of the city and bay. Queen Anne is not nearly as established as other neighborhoods, but it does have an amazing number of cafes, trendy music clubs and some old-time Seattle entertainments. It would serve as a good place to take that date who is uncertain where to go--or if you're uncertain where to take her.

But the main reason to visit Queen Anne is to check out the spectacular view. The observatory deck at 3rd Ave and Highland Drive is the best spot for this activity, especially at night or sunset.

Queen Anne is just over a mile (2km) northwest of downtown, and has frequent bus connections to the city center.

The Space Needle is the famed 600ft (180m) rocket-styled observation station and restaurant most recall when they think of Seattle. After the 41-second ride up its elevators to the top, visitors are treated to absolutely breathtaking 360° views.

The top of the 605-foot Space Needle is said to be "the best place to orient oneself to the city and its surroundings."

Also: Make sure to visit the Seattle Museum of Rock and Roll, which combines exhibitions of artifacts with interactive displays that help people create and play music on their own.

A tribute to the 'Seattle Sound', the museum was financed by billionaire Paul Allen, who was himself inspired by Jimi Hendrix, the legendary Seattle guitarist of the 1960's who gave much to those Seattle acts who would come after him. And of course, memorabilia from the bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many other local groups from the now-legendary 'grunge' era of popular music are proudly displayed, giving a history of the bands that sprang from Seattle and redefined the industry.
